IVF
In In-Vitro-Fertilization(IVF) can be performed for a modest cost in India. In this procedure, the fertilization of the egg with the sperm takes place outside the body. The fertilized egg would develop into embryos and the embryos would be implanted into the uterus. The IVF procedure can be explained in five steps :
1. Firstly, to stimulate the ovary in order to develop several eggs at the same rate, the patient is injected with FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone). This process is repeated for about 8 to 11 days.
2. The second step lasts for about 20 minutes and the patient is anaesthetised during this step. In this step, using an ultrasound probe, a thin needle is guided into the follicle of the ovary to extract follicle fluid and the embryologists retrieve the eggs from this fluid.
3. In the third step, along with the sperms and a nutrient fluid, the retrieved eggs are placed in a dish and incubated overnight. The eggs and the sperms fertilise and form into embryos. After assessment, the embryos are prepped for transfer.
4. The fourth step is the transfer of embryos into the uterus of the patient using transabdominal ultrasound guidance. The number of eggs to be transferred is determined after consultation with the patient. As the procedure only creates minor discomforts, anaesthesia is not used. Pregnancy tests are scheduled to confirm pregnancy.
5. Lastly, the remaining embryos are frozen for future use in case the treatment fails.
