THYROID SCAN

In this procedure, a radioactive tracer is distributed in the thyroid gland

1. Thyroid scan pertechnetate (99m Tc04-)

This procedure is used as a radioactive tracer to evaluate congenital hypothyroidism, thyroiditis and substemal mass-Midline neck swelling. It also checks the functioning of palpable thyroid nodule and detect ectopic thyroid tissue.

2. Whole body and thyroid scan-Sodium iodide (Na131 |)  This procedure visualises thyroid cancer & metastases in the body  and assesses remnant thyroid tissues in post-operative thyroid cancer.

3. Parathyroid Scan-Pertechnetate (99m Tc04-) and 99m Tc-MIBI  This procedure focuses on detecting and localizing Parathyroid adenoma.

4. 131 I-MIBG Scan This scan detects adrenal and extra-adrenal pheochromocytoma and Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs).

5. Radioactive Iodine Uptake Test (RAIU) RAIU test assesses the functioning of the thyroid gland. This test can confirm hyperthyroidism, calculate therapeutic dose of I-131c), determine autonomous thyroid tissue and the causes of thyrotoxicosis. Etiologies that result in an increased RAIU includes hyperthyroidism, rebound following the abrupt withdrawal of antithyroid meds, long term antithyroid therapy, enzyme defects, iodine starvation, lithium therapy, early Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and rebound during recovery from subacute thyroiditis. Blocked trapping, blocked organification, parenchymal destruction and hypothyroidism are etiologies that can result in a decreased RIAU.
